Georges Matthieu was a French abstract painter, and considered one of the founders of lyrical abstraction. Lyrical abstraction, in contrast to geometric abstraction, is known for its organic forms and lack of premeditation by the artist. There is no reliance on preexisting shapes or reference.

Southern Light Stations is an investigation into the way people viewed the skies before the telescope. The photographs presented are a range of sea- and sky-scapes that reveal enduring characteristics about our relationship with the natural world.

The eye is drawn to the imposing spheres, held aloft only by flimsy strings. Dwarfed by the dominance of the natural world, the photographs fill us both with wonder and the sobering reality of our vulnerability and insignificance.
