These photographs were taken at U.S.S.R.’s nuclear test site, Semipalatinsk. Before each photograph was developed, thermonuclear strata was scattered on the negative, creating light spots.

Georges Matthieu was a French abstract painter, and considered one of the founders of lyrical abstraction. Lyrical abstraction, in contrast to geometric abstraction, is known for its organic forms and lack of premeditation by the artist. There is no reliance on preexisting shapes or reference.
