Georges Matthieu was a French abstract painter, and considered one of the founders of lyrical abstraction. Lyrical abstraction, in contrast to geometric abstraction, is known for its organic forms and lack of premeditation by the artist. There is no reliance on preexisting shapes or reference.

While born in Japan, Toshimitsu Imai practiced in France post WWII. There he adopted the art informel approach to abstract painting, characterized by intensity and a highly improvisational nature.
